Beyond the Ice Wall

A TTRPG guidebook based on the Fate System.

Developed by Jacob Woolley, Alexander Ribich, Jorja McGrath, Sam Henville, Aerin Larrazabal, and Meagan Shaw

Role: Artist and Game Mechanic Design

Developed during my first year of QUT for unit DXB205: Interactive Narrative Design in 2023, Beyond the Ice Wall is a Table-Top Role Playing Game guidebook, based on the Fate Accelerated System.

Beyond the Ice Wall was primarily inspired by the Flat Earth conspiracy theory, which also believes that Antarctica is an ice wall surrounding a disc shaped world. We combined this belief with the concept of there being further land beyond the wall, a sprawling fantasy world with a wide range of different races, fauna, and islands for the player to explore along with a system of magic. The world is set during the early 1700s, inspired by the Golden Age of Piracy and traveling by ship across islands.

The second assignment of this class was a solo project to create a campaign book based on this guidebook, which can be seen here.

Personal Contributions

My work on Beyond the Ice Wall was as an artist and designer. Each member of the team designed at least one race or faction to add to the world, mine being a humanoid bird-like people. I also drew the finalised designs for each race, NPC, and creature used in the guidebook.

I also worked on the design of the job mechanic unique to Beyond the Ice Wall, where the player or DM has the option of choosing a job for their character, giving them an extra stunt and item to start with, creating further immersion in the world. I also designed the example player characters given in the guidebook.
